Welcome everyone. My name is Dayna Schmidt-Johnson. I'm the Community Manager of the Writual Society as well as the house astrologer. Today we are going to be talking about candle magic. I don't know about you guys, but I love candles. I blame it on my fire sign. And I do like, my spells and intentions, I feel like they're more powerful when I use candles. So I'm really excited to talk today to Rhonda Harris-Choudhry. She's a psychic and intuitive, a spiritual counselor, a metaphysical healer, hypnotherapist. Listen, she does it all. And we're gonna talk to, talk about candle magic with her today. Welcome, Rhonda.

Thank you. I'm so glad to be here.

I'm so glad to have you here. So let's just start by talking about what candle magic is, and maybe what it isn't, like, what's the difference between just lighting a candle on my table and practicing candle magic.

Rhonda Harris-Choudhry
Okay, so the difference between just, you know, lighting a nice candle on your table and candle magic is, a lot of times, you know you buy the scented candles anyway because it smells nice, but you're not putting an intention behind it. With candle magic, you're actually putting an intention into the candle into the wick and into the flame itself. So that it will bring you what you want to manifest what you want. And then of course, you'll use different colors, depending on what it is you're trying to manifest. Now some people like candles to manifest other, people like candles to honor deity, you know, various gods and goddesses. But the important thing is when you're doing any kind of magic, there needs to be an intention behind it. And you have to have it go, correspond with the emotion that goes with that intention. And you put that into the candle.

Dayna Schmidt-Johnson
So really, there's, I can easily be doing candle magic by just lighting a candle on my table, as long as I'm putting the intention into it. And starting with that moment.

Rhonda Harris-Choudhry
Yes, and here's the important thing with that though, is your thoughts are your intentions, your your emotions, so you can be doing adverse candle magic and not know it. If you come home and you're in a bad mood, and you light the candle while you're thinking about your stupid boss or your, your cheating boyfriend or whatever. And you're and you're lighting the candle. You're also putting that into the candle which can project out and make things worse. So candle magic is working a lot of times whether you know it or not.

Dayna Schmidt-Johnson
That's almost scary.

Rhonda Harris-Choudhry
Because most people don't think about that, you know, they'll come home and they'll wait. You know, people will buy a nice Reiki healing candle because they had a bad day at work. But they're thinking about that bad day of work as they're lighting the candle and they're putting that into the candle, which is counterproductive for what it is they're trying to do.

Dayna Schmidt-Johnson
Oh, this is such good advice. Just right off the bat. Have the intention be positive and clear yourself first. Right?

Rhonda Harris-Choudhry
Exactly, exactly. If you can clear yourself. You know, if you just even get a smudge, just simple smudge you can get them in any metaphysical store. They sell them at Sprouts, they sell them in a Whole Foods, lot of places sell them now, and cleanse yourself and then light your candle.

Dayna Schmidt-Johnson
Brilliant advice. Oh, love it. How long have you been doing candle magic, like the first time that you really set an intention and around the candle and it like really connected with you?

Rhonda Harris-Choudhry
I would have to say, God, I hate dating myself. But back in the 80s, you know, we didn't have, back then, we didn't have computers and Amazon and 5000 metaphysical stores, we had a library. And I remember when we got our first metaphysical store in the town of Babylon in New York. And they had a book on you know, all kinds of books. I was just in heaven. And I remember getting a book. I'm trying to remember what the name of it was it was so long ago. But that's when I really connected with doing candle magic and watching the flames. Watching the flames alone will help to raise your psychic abilities and you can even put your challenges into the flame of the candle to burn them away. There's so many different things that you can do. But I would say back in the 80s is when I really got started.

That's amazing. And the journey that's there because yeah, like you said, now you can easily find all the resources on everything.

Rhonda Harris-Choudhry
Anything you want! Back then, if you wanted to learn about this, you had to go on a quest, literally.

Dayna Schmidt-Johnson
Yes.

Rhonda Harris-Choudhry
Literally.

Dayna Schmidt-Johnson
Yeah. And and be specific, really, about what you were looking for, too.

Rhonda Harris-Choudhry
And the universe will bring it to you.

Dayna Schmidt-Johnson
I love that. So what do you love about practicing candle magic?

Rhonda Harris-Choudhry
Well, for one thing, I love the element of fire, it balances me out. I'm a real water girl. I'm a Pisces. My name Rhonda means river, my middle name when means waterfall. And I'm a Chinese water tiger in Chinese astrology, so flames helped to balance me out. I think that's why I came to the desert of New Mexico to kind of get a balance going on. But also, there's just so many things you can do with candle magic, like I said, you can use it to cleanse the negative energy in a room, you know, put your problems into it manifest things through it. It's just so many things that you can do with it. But mainly, I think I just love the fire, especially because it balances me out.

Dayna Schmidt-Johnson
Yeah, the fire element is huge. And I feel like candles are involved so often in spellwork. And in magic in general, just helping to bring that fire element in whether it's like you where you're, you're lacking it. And so it helps balance or like me who has more fire, and so it helps fuel and like, tune into that energy. And then kind of all the spectrums in between. Right?

Rhonda Harris-Choudhry
Exactly. And when you know, the other thing is when you you're looking at candle magic. Candle magic is, um, it's a form of alchemy. So when you're thinking of the flame, but if you look at the wax, the wax is turned into water liquid. So you actually have a combination of fire and the element of water the fluid working together to bring you what you want. So it's not just the can- the fire of the flame. And then also, you have the element of air, because air feeds the flame. So even though we think of it in terms of fire, you also have the water element because the wax turns to liquid. And you also have the air element, if you want to bring the earth element and you know you're sitting it on top of something, you can even bring that into it, or a lot of people like what I do, for example, if I'm going to do, let's say a specific thing, candle spells I need to do, I will circle those candles with salt to keep their intentions pure. So the three of them aren't getting together. So that can also bring in the earth element as well. You want to protect your candle, you can use a ring of salts, or I use also mason jar lids, because they've got the hole in it. And this will set up sacred space around the candle. So that if you come home and you're in a bad mood and you look at your burning candle, you don't want to that energy, or people coming into your home and say oh nice candle, putting their energy into it. So but you're still; the candle magic, it's not just the fire.

Dayna Schmidt-Johnson
It's everything. I love that. That's so exciting. So you've already talked about some of this, but like what are some of the other benefits of candle magic?

Rhonda Harris-Choudhry
Well, one of the things that makes it so versatile and one of the things I love so much about it is that it's not cookie cutter, you can change that magic to what it is custom to you based on your custom color chart. So I always have people write down what different colors mean to them. So for example, if I were to ask you, what does the color red mean to you? What does the color red mean?

Passion. Love. Excitement.

Rhonda Harris-Choudhry
Okay, so for me, red means strength, vitality, well being because it represents Mars. You know, it gives you that vitality or defense because Mars will keep and fight. So everyone has their own definition of what a color means. So I always tell people for example, if they are reading, you know in a spell book and it says to use a blue candle for let's just say to bring money in use a blue candle. If something inside of you says you know what I feel like it should be a yellow candle, use the yellow candle, because it's got to go along any spell you read is based on someone else's opinions. You have to customize it to be about you and what you want. And so you can change the different colors. And it's just so versatile. So healing, love, money, peace, all of these things can be, you know, gotten through doing candle magic, depending on what it is that you want.

Dayna Schmidt-Johnson
That's so great. To know that it really what matters more is how it resonates with you. And to pick because sometimes you may not, maybe you don't even have the whole spectrum of all these colors of candles, right? And so you select from what you have. And I think some people would be like, oh, I don't have that I can't do this spell. Right?

Rhonda Harris-Choudhry
No worries if that happened! If you can't get the color of candle that you want, you can always default to white or black, because they both contain all colors. And and so what I'll do is, you know, if I don't have time to go to an actual metaphysical store to get a green seven day candle, I can go to the Dollar Tree and get a white, they have jar candles that will burn for about three days. But then instead of if it's white, then I'll use glitter in the color that I want. Glitter is very big with candle magic, we love the glitter, as much glitter as you can, depending on the candle. So for example, for tea light candles, which, my box, I always have candles next to me. For example, a tea light candle, you can't put too much on it, because you see how it's filled all the way to the top. So anything you add will add volume to that candle. So you can only put a little tiny bit otherwise you'll drown the flame. But if you have like a regular, here's a jar candle that I just happen to have sitting here, I have a little extra room here. So I can put herbs and things in it and not have to worry about it. Because I'm not right at the top. But again, the other thing you can use. Another benefit that I've used it for that has helped me and other people tremendously, is to burn away past life challenges. And to figure out what is going on to do a diagnostic with the candles because you can read the candle wax, what's left over, you'll see pictures, you'll see things in it. And it can really let you know what's going on from another lifetime and burn it away. Because we do bring that in.

Dayna Schmidt-Johnson
So it's kind of like reading tea leaves in that way.

Rhonda Harris-Choudhry
Yes, actually it is. You can look at the pictures that are left over in the wax. Or you can look at like I burned a lot of candles in a mason jar. And it will show you I use the figurine candles to burn away whatever it is that's slowing me down or whatever. So that candle represents me. And so I'll burn the black wine to remove and destroy whatever it is that's holding me back from whatever it is I'm trying to do. And then I'll use a corresponding color to bring in what I want. If I want to bring in wealth or I'll use green. If I'm trying to fix my house, I'll use white depending on what I want. So you can use a lot of figurine candles I'll be actually showing you in the candle magic class examples of how well that works.

Yay, that I cannot wait for. It's going to be incredible. And it's funny, you know divine timing and all my candle just went out so I can't wait to attempt this reading of the wax afterwards.

You'll be amazed at the things you see in the wax. The symbolism is amazing.

Oh, that's astounding. It would have never even occurred to me. So I'm so glad you brought that up. Oh, Rhonda I feel like we could talk candle magic all day. Um, you are going to be our May 1 - for Beltane itself - teacher in the Writual Society because we're going to do a Beltane Candle Magic ritual. I can't wait to have you in there. I can't wait to feel the Beltane magic with you in the Society, having all that energy there together, bringing us together. Beltane is a fire festival. But as you like made very clear, we're also honoring the deities. Right. So it's very exciting time.

Absolutely! You can use it if you want fame and fortune, anything you want, you can achieve it through that.

Wow, candle magic is super powerful.

It is super, super. That's why like they said you have to be careful if you're just lighting a candle make sure in a good mood, don't light a candle in a bad mood.

If you take nothing else away, I think that's a huge huge candle magic tip.

So absolutely. And I'll give you one more little tip.

Because you know a lot of people work in offices or they work in spaces where they can't burn candles, especially if they're like flight attendants and things that go into hotel rooms, you can get the little LED candles, like at the Dollar Tree, electricity is fire, they run on batteries. And you can actually get some acrylic paints and water based paint and paint the outside of it with the color that you want. And you can use those.

I love that because yeah, we have to kind of adapt right especially if you're in hotels a lot or you know you're you have any kind of I have I always run the risk of walking away from my candles and you know, I forget about them and so I would never want that to be an issue so I definitely have some electric candles to help myself out. 

Rhonda Harris-Choudhry
Definitely use them.

It's nice to know it works, it works just as well, is what you're saying.

Rhonda Harris-Choudhry
It does! And you can burn them on the dashboard of your car. It's just electric on the way to work. You know or burnin on your desk. No one will know, no one cares.

Dayna Schmidt-Johnson
Right. Right. Oh, that's a great tip everyone taking electric candle to to your desk at work and pop it on all day long and manifest the good stuff right.
